Hello,
We're the Porters

Rick & Karen Porter, owners and innkeepers since December 2019.

Rick and Karen Porter, owners and innkeepers of Porter Haus Bed & Breakfast

Meet the owners

Rick and Karen met and were married in Houston. We lived in west Houston and Cypress, Texas for 19 years, until Rick's work took our family to northern California for 15 long years. Fortunately retirement provided us an opportunity to return to our roots in Texas.

We intentionally built a house on our 14-plus acre property to open a bed and breakfast. It sits up on a hill and looks out over the surrounding Texas Hill Country — the view is the reason a lot of guests never want to leave the back patio.

Porter Haus officially opened its doors to guests in December 2019, and we still run it ourselves. That means when you stay with us, you're staying in our home, not a managed property — and we're looking forward to meeting a lot of new friends.

Come visit with us and enjoy a taste of the wonderful Texas Hill Country.

Meet the (other) innkeepers

Rick and Karen aren't the only two who greet guests at the door. Bear and Gertie consider themselves full partners in the business — mostly in the areas of supervision, sock inventory, and quality control on the breakfast leftovers.

Bear, the Porter Haus rescue dog

Bear

Gentle giant · Fredericksburg shelter rescue

Bear came to us from the Fredericksburg animal shelter, and he's never quite gotten over his good fortune. He's a big guy with an even bigger personality, and first impressions can be a little startling — but give him five minutes and a chance to decide you're trustworthy, and you'll have a devoted, wiggly shadow for the rest of your stay. Once Bear trusts you, he's your friend for life.

Gertie, the Porter Haus miniature dachshund

Gertie

8 lbs of pure management · miniature dachshund

Don't let the size fool you — Gertie runs this property, and Bear knows it. This eight-pound princess has a long list of house rules, an even longer list of exceptions she makes for herself, and a well-documented weakness for stealing socks straight out of open suitcases. Consider yourself warned, and consider your stolen socks a small price for her company.

Bear and Gertie together at Porter Haus Bed & Breakfast

An unlikely duo, and an inseparable one — Bear the gentle giant and Gertie the pint-sized boss have settled into a partnership that mostly involves her giving orders and him happily going along with it. Come stay a couple nights and you'll see the whole operation in action (just mind your socks).
