Fourteen hilltop acres. One really good breakfast.

A working Hill Country home, ten minutes from Main Street Fredericksburg. Four rooms, honest conversation, and a porch view the deer already know about.

Rick and Karen Porter, owners and innkeepers of Porter Haus Bed & Breakfast

Rick and Karen live here too

Porter Haus isn't a property somebody manages from town. It's Rick and Karen Porter's own 14-acre hilltop home, and since they opened their doors in 2019, they've run it themselves — which is the difference guests mention most.

You won't find a front desk here. You'll find two people who remember your name, ask about your dietary needs before you arrive, and are genuinely glad you came. Past guests describe it less like a hotel stay and more like visiting family who happen to have a spectacular view.

Karen's kitchen is the real draw

Breakfast is a big reason why guests return. Every morning starts with a made-from-scratch, country-gourmet breakfast. The kind of cooking guests bring up long after they've checked out — especially how easily and deliciously Karen accommodates dietary needs, without it feeling like a special request.

  • Home-cooked, from-scratch breakfast every morning
  • Special diets and allergies accommodated with advance notice
  • Coffee on the back patio, with deer and wild turkeys for company

It's not a continental spread in a lobby. It's breakfast at a table, in a house, made by someone who wants you to enjoy it.

Four rooms. All king beds. All quiet.

Three of the four sit off a private guest retreat with its own keyless entry, so you can come and go without passing through the main house. Every room has a private bath with a walk-in shower, quality linens and sheets, and blackout curtains for sleeping in.

A recurring theme: Rick and Karen made guests feel like family, not customers — several said that mattered more than the room itself.
